Origin of a SuperHero
Our little Bubba was diagnosed with stage III neuroblastoma on May 15, 2007~ the day before his second birthday. While in the hospital for treatment, he received a Vermont Teddy Bear dressed up like Superman. Instead of an “S” on the costume, however, there was a “B.”

The bear became known as “Bub the super bear.” Well, if that bear was a hero, then our Bub certainly was. He faced numerous treatments and tests with a smile on his face and a joy and courage that we all hope to emulate. So our Bubba became Bub, and then Super Bub, Super Hero extraordinaire, and a super hero was born.

Never Forgotten
GOLDRUSH!
WHAT IS GOLDRUSH? The idea behind the GOLDRUSH Childhood Cancer Awareness Walk is simply to educate our communities about childhood cancer and to get them involved in caring for the needs of their community as it is affected by this horrible disease.

The first Goldrush walk was held on August 28. CLICK HERE to read about it and see pictures from the walk.
2010 Walk for Wishes
On February 13, 2009, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan left a stamp on our hearts in such a huge way. They granted a wish for a dying child--our SuperBub. While it was so clear to us that our little Bub would not have long to enjoy his wish, the wonderful people at Make-A-Wish acted as if it were something he would enjoy for a lifetime. In bringing joy to our Braeden, they brought joy and encouragement to us, too.

We would love to have you involved! This year's walk is on Saturday, September 18. Whether you walk, or can simply sponsor us as we walk, you can help make a dream come true for a child who has endured so much.

Our goal again this year is to raise at least enough money to provide Bub's Wish to another special boy or girl...thank you for joining our team, thank you for sharing in the joy of wishing, and in the power of a step...

FLY HIGH LITTLE BUDDY!

Brendan Hogan

On September 29, 2008 Brendan was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Brendan had been experiencing excruciating headaches and vomiting and after several doctor visits that didn't help, he was taken the ER. He couldn't keep any meds down and his headache was beyond control. After the diagnosis, we were then transferred via ambulance to DeVos Children's Hospital. His tumor was completely removed and spinal fluid was clear of cancer. The tumor was a medulloblastomoa. Brendan finished a 6 week course of cranio-spinal radiation with chemo and began nine rounds of intense chemotherapy that was due to end in November or December, 2009. On October 13, 2009, we discovered that Brendan's cancer was back. We began a new chemotherapy treatment which in January we discovered wasn't helping. At that time we began more radiation with chemo in hopes of stopping the spread of his disease.
Brendan has been home since January 1st after what was approx a 3 month admission at "Camp DeVos". During that stay Brendan became septic resulting from an infection in his port. After the most amazing display of strength and determination while on a respirator and basically in a coma for six days, he recovered amazingly well. Many didn't think he'd leave the PICU alive.
In March it appeared as if things were improving on his scans, but on April 9, 2010, we found out that Brendan's cancer has continued to spread and that there is very little at this point that our team of doctors and staff could do to further fight/treat Brendan's tumor growth. We are all home and enjoying every moment we have together the best we can. While Brendan is in a lot of pain day and night he remains mostly a very happy little boy, one who is happy to be alive and doesn't want that to change.
Brendan sees the glass half full - always. He told us just a few hours after learning of his potential death, "I'm not done fighting and if we do all we can do and it doesn't work, well that will be ok too". Such grace from a 7 year old facing death square in the eyes. Brenner's dad shares, "We all love you with every bit of our hearts Brendan. Why we fight is so simple...because they are our children and because if you love, you fight."

Friday, August 13, 2010 at 5:09am, Brendan won the ultimate victory and flew in to the arms of Jesus. Though he may be gone from this earth, physically, Brendan will always be in our hearts; remembered as another brave warrior who fought with courage and grace. He is another reason we stay in the fight to find a cure.

September is quickly approaching. Did you know that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month? How about getting involved in the fight to raise awareness and find a cure. How about doing it in the name of Brendan or another hero, like our own SuperBub? How about doing it for a child yet to be diagnosed? No child should have to endure what these children have. Let's work together to make GOLD: The New Pink. There are many opportunities to get involved. Host your own GOLDRUSH! walk, or join us for the second annual SuperBub Scramble. If you're not from the West Michigan area, check out our events calendar for things going on around the country that may be happening in your area. If you don't find anything in your area, click on one of the links to the right side of this page and visit the sites of our friends and see what they may have planned for September. YOU can make a difference!

It's time to refocus our energies on our future! UNTIL THE WHOLE WORLD HEARS!!!
