Origin of a SuperHero
Our little Bubba was diagnosed with stage III neuroblastoma on May 15, 2007~ the day before his second birthday. While in the hospital for treatment, he received a Vermont Teddy Bear dressed up like Superman. Instead of an “S” on the costume, however, there was a “B.”
The bear became known as “Bub the super bear.” Well, if that bear was a hero, then our Bub certainly was. He faced numerous treatments and tests with a smile on his face and a joy and courage that we all hope to emulate. So our Bubba became Bub, and then Super Bub, Super Hero extraordinaire, and a super hero was born.
SUPER HEROES UNITE!
It has been said that awareness is more than just knowledge. With awareness, comes responsibility. Awareness should change us; cause us to act. While we may have a desire to act on our knowledge, we may not know what we can do. Fortunately, there are many groups and organizations all over the world who offer many opportunities to get involved in the fight for our kids. Each month, Super Bub's Super Heroes highlights one of these groups as a way to arm you with knowledge, and give you ideas on how you can get involved.
Our Super Hero team of the month is...
Blair's Tree of Hope!Blair's Tree of Hope exists to help meet the needs of families with children facing life-threatening illnesses. They do this in very simple and practical ways. As a family who walked this road, the generosity of family and friends who stepped in to meet our needs was invaluable. No matter how they tried though, we still had needs that would have gone unmet if it hadn't been for organizations like Blair's Tree of Hope.
HOPE…..4 SIMPLE LETTERS PUT TOGETHER TO FORM ONE POWERFUL IDEA….Helping Other People Everyday. The thought that makes us smile, even chokes us up just a bit. Could we, this group of kind and caring friends, really make a difference?
On June 22, 2005 the Anderson family was forever changed. Blair Erin, then 14 years old was rushed to the hospital feeling worse then she had ever felt before. After some blood work and tests, the word no family wants to hear was quietly spoken…CANCER. With no time to think, they went home packed a suitcase for Blair and headed straight to Children’s Hospital. This was the beginning of a journey for one family – one family who mirrors many others.
Blair, like so many other children, spent months and months in the hospital receiving treatments. In many cases the treatments make these kids even sicker than before they started. Their families are scared, stressed, and have no time in their days to handle the routines that they have been so used to. The basics are left undone…the driveway shoveling, the grass cutting, the dog walking, grocery shopping, cooking and yes even eating. Healthy meals are replaced with fast food or vending machine food for Mom, Dad and siblings as there is just no time for anything else.
Throughout Blair’s illness she never lost HOPE that she would be cancer free. She fought courageously not only for her self but for all other kids she met along the way. Blair lost her battle on Sunday March 25, 2007 after conquering cancer on two separate occasions. She left behind so many wonderful memories and an idea an idea to help people.
So yes! That’s the answer to the question at the beginning of “Who We are”.. YES…YES….YES, we can HELP OTHER PEOPLE EVERYDAY. WE can make a difference. There are families that need our help, they need to eat healthy foods even though they have no time to cook….they need to have a clean and neat yard, they need help with their children, their homes and their pets. Simply put, they need us – Blair’s Tree of Hope!
Perhaps you have wanted to make a difference in the life of a family in need, but didn't know where to begin. Take a moment and visit Blair's Tree of Hope to learn more about them. They are a great example of how even a simple act of kindness can make a great impact. While Blair's Tree of Hope may not be in your area, you can still make a difference. Contact your local children's hospital and inquire about volunteer opportunities, ask your church if they know of a family in need. The opportunities are out there, just waiting for YOU!
